issue 06

if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything

Pick of the week

Lapka [Environment monitor]

Elegantly designed, the Lapka is a 'personal environment monitor' that looks quite intriguing and surprisingly tactile. Its website is not bad either. But does it all combine to make it something you would want to buy?

MailChimp [Annual report]

Annual reports can be dull, but when you pull out the pertinent information and dump the fluff, good graphic design with elegantly crafted HTML and CSS can really make an impact. MailChimp have done exactly that. Wouldn't it be great to see other organisations follow suit? Warby Parker had a go.

Visiomath [App design]

There's some great work on Peter Urban's website (no, I'd never heard of him either), but this particular app idea makes me (almost) want to go back to school. It's focused ideas like this that show how much good design (and not just colouring in) can bring to rethinking how institutions and services can work with new technology and attitudes.

Storyville: The House I Live In [Documentary]

An informative and illuminating look at America's War on Drugs, available on the BBC iPlayer until 4 March.

"...the film investigates how political and economic corruption have fuelled the war for forty years, despite persistent evidence of its moral, economic and practical failures."

It's an hour and forty-five minutes long and well worth watching (if you haven't already).
