‘The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well’, said Ralph Waldo Emerson, or maybe Leo Rosten, or Thomas Carlyle.

The Antonine Wall: Frontiers of the Roman Empire

Interesting content

Picture

Quite a few people know about Hadrian's Wall (even English Heritage), but maybe not the Antonine Wall. It's an ancient landmark in Scotland with an intriguing history.

Well worth perusing its story over a cuppa and maybe even visiting the place as part of a holiday.

Important

The simple (and obvious) things in life are well worth following and supporting. Certainly worth it considering it's for our life support system.

“

Our aim is to prevent climate breakdown by restoring our life support systems.

When living systems – like forests, peat bogs, saltmarshes and the seabed – are allowed to recover, they draw down carbon from the atmosphere, reducing the chances of climate catastrophe.

Their restoration will also minimise extinction and ecological collapse, and create a richer world of wonders for us to enjoy.

Let Me Not Be Mad: A Story of Unravelling Minds

Recommended reading

We have many facets, foibles, peculiarities and many more nouns that can probably be applied to describe what makes us tick.

This book is a fantastic and compelling read, even though names have been changed to protect the identities of those written about (including the author's). It all just adds to the book's brilliance and shows that we are complex and that deserves to be celebrated and not necessarily defined by a tick list.

“

Measuring the mind is contentious; philosophically, ethically, statistically.”

Last issue's stats

95 subscribers are recorded as receiving the previous issue; 28 of those subscribers opened the email and probably scanned it, maybe even read it, after seeing it arrive in their inbox. Surprisingly, of those subscribers, 14 managed to use a few more motor skills and press some of its links. The rest probably have the issue in their email junk box and probably (don't) wonder 'Whatever happened to Thursday afternoon?'
