Thursday Afternoon

Greetings *|IF:FNAME|**|FNAME|**|END:IF|*

Here’s some general interestingness for your perusal complemented with a few words by the vice-president-elect of the United States of America, Kamala Harris: “What we all want is public safety. We don’t want rhetoric that’s framed through ideology.”

Handheld gaming system

Playdate
Picture

A rather fun and decent looking new handheld gaming system that’s probably going to become a future classic.

“

It’s yellow. It fits in your pocket. It’s got a beautiful black and white screen. It’s not super cheap, but not super expensive. It includes brand new games from some amazing creators. Plus it has a crank.”

Panic

The games for the Playdate are initially going to be released secretly, with one every week for twelve weeks, which seems to add to the complete package being quite a neat idea and one that proves you can do things a bit differently despite typical expectations and boundaries.

Homemade delights

Maa Dha
Picture

Maa Dha (Mother’s Blend) is a new online business selling homemade traditional Garam Masala for cooking and Indian Cha Masala tea (which is not in teabags but is a proper Cha Masala mix to brew in a pan).

It’s just beginning but we’re sure more homemade delights will be making their way to the website over time, so it seems well worth bookmarking to help your culinary adventures and support a new supplier.

For a little assistance in purchasing here’s a discount code – MDM10 – which is valid until the end of December 2020 and gets you 10% off.

App

Italic Type
Picture

This is “a new app for every chapter of your book life” and it looks like it could be quite good given its makers are rethinking some key parts of the reading and sharing experience, including endeavours to help support local libraries and independent bookstores.

BBC Radio 4’s Thinking Allowed

Corruption
Worth hearing

Given this podcast is more than a day old it’s now ancient history in these socially distanced, yet digitally-crammed-like-sardines, early years of the twenty-first-century and so you may wish to ignore it. However, we suggest you don’t and that you make the effort to hear the sensible views and perspectives given about corruption. It’s a surprisingly simple concept, but many of society’s systems and institutions aren’t set up to effectively deal with it; when they do counter corruption though, good things happen.

Consider complementing the podcast about corruption with reading these words by Kenan Malik: From Grenfell to PPE, absolute power still corrupts in high places.

Building confidence

Vaccine Confidence Project

A thoroughly decent enterprise that is “...listening for early signals of public distrust and questioning and providing risk analysis and guidance to engage the public early and pre-empt potential programme disruptions.” Given those words, it seems like a very good campaign to follow, learn from and understand.

Electric-go-kart-with-a-boot

Found via siteInspire

Lucid
Picture

We’re not sure if this maker of mobility vehicles based in California is as clear, mentally rational and/or sane as their name suggests. Still, it seems they can afford a few marketing “experts”, copywriters...

“

The spirit of California moves us to think beyond mobility, and design for a world where life is the most important journey we’ll ever take; to look beyond tomorrow and shape a future where we no longer have to choose between doing great things and doing the right thing; and to explore beyond ourselves, and create experiences that remind us what it’s like to feel truly alive.”

Lucid

...and people who can make digital experiences online as their website, to use the professional term, is “a bit shiny”, kind of like the exterior of the electric-go-kart-with-a-boot they make.

Emulator

macintosh.js
Picture

Forget the new macOS Big Sur and revisit the (halcyon?) days of Mac OS 8 through a JavaScript emulator, which ironically needs a modern Mac (or Linux or Windows machine) to be experienced!

“

Does it work? Yes! Quite well, actually – on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Bear in mind that this is written entirely in JavaScript, so please adjust your expectations.”

Felix Rieseberg

Felix does also state in the read me that it should be a native app, so you never know, one might get made so some can go Forward to the Past more easily!

Sitting Pretty
Picture

Rebekah Taussig writes a seriously brilliant, insightful, honest, funny and realistic book about the view from her ...ordinary resilient disabled body that is well worth your reading time.

“

Ableism separates, isolates, assumes. It’s starved for imagination, creativity, and curiosity. It’s fueled by fear. It oppresses. All of us.”

Rebekah Taussig

The book’s title is the name of her Instagram profile – @sitting_pretty – and she uses that particular platform ...as a medium to 1) reflect on what it means to live as a disabled woman, 2) connect with others who are also processing what it means to live from a particular body, and 3) share more beautiful, nuanced photos of a body that looks and moves differently than most.
