Near the end of a rather insightful and entertaining book (although a smidge too American in places!) about humour, I came across a rather helpful snippet...
Don’t make another person’s identity the prop, plot point, or punch line. In short: Maybe your humour failed because you weren’t the one who should be making the joke in the first place.

Using humour has its place, but as the tips and learnings from this rather funny and well-researched book infer, levity is a bit of a craft and takes some time to make and get appropriate laughs and meaningful, long-lasting connection with its recipients. But, having said that (probably demonstrating my skill at overthinking it all!) humour is well worth the effort.
