A good read about Lenny’s early years. It paints an insightful picture of his family life growing up in New York and then LA (and flitting between the two and a few other places), the many (helpful and challenging) supporting characters in those formative years and his early musical attempts and eventual pro career.
An insightful memoir that is set up for another part to follow in his later years!
A good passage
I was obsessed with sound, though I had no idea how to mix the sounds spinning inside my head. I’d hear a Stevie Wonder groove, a Hendrix lick, a Zeppelin riff, a Steely Dan Pretzel Logic story. How to put ’em together? Just keep listening. Listen to Bob Marley. Listen to the Eagles. Listen to Phoebe Snow. Listen to the Commodores. Listen to everything.
A second good passage
I fell into a role [after debut album launch and tours] that became as confusing as it was exciting. I was prepared musically, but not emotionally. I didn’t know then that the life of a rock star is in equal measure a beautiful blessing and a perilous burden. That life would prove to be more strenuous and challenging than anything I’d ever faced. But my difficulties – my foolishness, heartaches, and mistakes – were not behind me. They were all in my future.
