It’s a thoroughly decent debut for Billingham’s new series of a new lead character – a detective sergeant – which has a great tone and reality to it that satisfyingly keeps a good pace, offering interest and intrigue in and around a good bunch of settings and characters that all help keep the pages turning steadily to find out what happens next.
Managed to guess the killer correctly but didn’t do my surmising in a particularly efficient way and, being honest, it was a bit of a last-minute guess.
Still, top work.
That’s the novel and its crime fighting team, not my detective work!
A good passage
She was somewhere in her early thirties, had short dark hair and was, he [DS Miller] guessed, of Chinese descent. Guessed, because making a presumption about such things was always dodgy, not least because you could end up looking like someone who was not culturally sensitive.
Or just a pillock.
