How To Change Your Life

Five Steps To Achieving High Performance

Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes

Having read it

★★★☆☆

A reasonable read that is full of spirit and life but, for me, an ever so slightly too-marketed-in-its-title-and-five-step, tick list-like approach, even though it rightly claims it is, as with life in general, a journey, not a destination.

Still, despite my words and rating, it (no doubt like their podcast) was and will be a useful addition to people taking stock, reading (or hearing) and learning of and from others’ difficulties, achievements and adaptations and resilience to keeping their journey going.

It was refreshing to read of some of the referenced titles that I have read over the years and learned from and try (in my own way!) to nurture and grow from their insights.

A good passage

Anything that is associated with positive emotions and rewards – such as being seen, heard and listened to – will trigger an approach response; we want more of it, and we will move towards where it is being offered. Conversely, anything that may contain a negative emotion or experience – such as being ignored, dismissed or rejected – will be interpreted as a threat and trigger a powerful avoidance response, where we hesitate and make excuses not to take action.

This is known as the ‘minimise danger, maximis rewards’ response; according to the neuroscientist Evian Gordon, it is the fundamental organising principle of the brain.6

A second good passage

Change is perpetual. When you reach every destination, you will spot a new one on the horizon. Seek out the people and places that encourage you to walk straight on towards it.
