Kill Them With Kindness

★★★★

An interesting commentary on many an actual event and character of recent times and one that has a decent narrative and pace to keep the reader intrigued, entertained and maybe even thinking, ‘Is this actually non-fiction, with names changed just to avoid any legal repercussions?’.

Its underlying themes and observations make for an (quite easily?) achievable and very possible improved and meaningful outcomes for humanity and planet earth if only we all just were a bit more considerate, patient and understanding to others and ourselves: no drugs are necessary, just kindness, empathy and a dash of hope.

A good passage

The business of pharmaceuticals is so broken and corrupt, it makes the World Boxing Organisation look like a church fête tombola stand run by nuns.

A second good passage

But there will be conspiracy theories online as to why there is a sudden closure and there will be talk of government involvement – in the West, at least; China will control the information on their side. Some idiot will say that they are testing for anthrax, others will suggest aliens. There will be an anti-race / gender / animal cruelty angle somewhere.

It will be a mess.

But not with his generation. It’s everyone younger than [Dr. Haruto] Ikeda.

Because he lives in an age of spin. Of agenda. Of open and unabashed self-interest. This is his worry. Information travels instantly. And because everyone now seems to know about everything, straight away, they care about nothing all the time.

A third good passage

[...] Young people are not thinking of anyone else. They do not know nor understand the meaning of consequence. The disenfranchised youth are bored because there’s too much that they can do, now. Too much choice. Instant gratification. Porn on tap. McDonald’s deliveries. Home workouts. Movies that appear on their televisions at the same time they are released in the cinemas.

When you are told you can be whatever you want to be or can do anything that you want to do, you end up doing nothing. Becoming nothing.
