Community commodification
A long read (on a tuther website) but well worth it
There is a good read at Longreads about the commodification, almost of life, but certainly community. It’s worth your reading time and attention so (kind of like the piece alludes to with regards to the commodification of our lives!) pick a suitable time in your busy schedule to properly take it in and contemplate its perspective! Quite a few parts are worth quoting, but here are some words I picked from it...
Highlighting a difference between living and existing is central to the commodification of everything. It used to be the case that if you did not buy a certain singular product – the newest iPhone, for example – you were simply existing, not living. Now, it’s not just about product. It’s about community. If your experience of community isn’t individualized, fine-tuned to generate success on your terms, are you really living?
