High Citadel
Desmond Bagley
Having read it
★★★★★
First read this after my dad had recommended it (as a pretty decent and adventurous read from his own collection of, I think, early paperback editions of Bagley’s work) back in my teenage years and approximately thirty years later – with little recollection of its ins and outs other than the opening flight over the Andes – thoroughly enjoyed the (of its time) story, its page-turning pace and the characters and their travails, all over again.
A good passage
Night swoops early on the eastern slopes of the Andes. The mountain wall catches the setting sun, casting long shadows across the hot jungles of the interior. At five in the afternoon the sun was just touching the topmost peaks and O’Hara knew that in an hour it would be dark.
