A well-plotted, steady and enjoyable read and one that, given it is actually (as it stands currently!) the last in The Blind Detective series, is not reliant on its reader being aware of any previous investigations, even though some do get mentioned to assist context.

A good passage

While her father was thus engrossed, Anne, declining the offer of tea, had wandered along the road a little way – perhaps to look at what remained of the house next door, or just to remind herself of what life had been like when she was growing up in this pleasant neighbourhood before the war. Yes, one shouldn’t live in the past, thought Rowlands; but sometimes it was good to remember what had been.
